Earth Day predictions from 1970

Thanks to reader David F. Here are some of the Earth Day predictions from 1970. Some of them will sound scarily familiar to those being made today, which will be just as wrong:
“We have about five more years at the outside to do something.”
• Kenneth Watt, ecologist

“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”
• George Wald, Harvard Biologist

“We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.”
• Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist

“Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.”
• New York Times editorial, the day after the first Earth Day

Read the rest here.

  • Hang on, the 4th one makes no prediction of a timescale so it can't be wrong on that count. The 4th point doesn't belong in that list because it is totally correct.

Unless you think conserving resources and reducing pollution is a bad idea? What are you, some kind of kitten killer?

  • I agree, but it demonstrates the alarmism that is so prevalent in the media today has been there many times before.

(And no kittens killed today either!)
